Soda Wars Episode XXVII: July 6th - 12th

Welcome to Soda Wars Episode XXVII for the week of June 29th through July 5th.
Soda Wars is a weekly blog presented by the Peanut Butter List.
Every Wednesday (Friday this week, next week should be back on track) we illustrate which store has the best price on your favorite brands of soda. We price compare PepsiCoke and 7up in the 2 liter, 12 pack and 20/24 pack packages at King SoopersSafeway and Albertsons. With this blog you'll 'know before you go' who has the best deal on your favorite brands of soda each week before you head off to the stores.

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend with plenty of friends, family, BBQ's, food and fireworks while keeping all of your fingers intact. July 4th is officially behind us now, and for the time being, so are the soda sales. There are a couple fair prices out there this week but in comparison to last week, it might be cheaper to start drinking gasoline.

I also want to apologize for getting this to you on Friday instead of Wednesday. Every now and again life can get out of control and time just slips by. Please forgive me for being late with this weeks Soda Wars, and I will make every effort to have this published every Wednesday hereafter.

Please, in the comments section below, tell me you bought your soda at last weeks prices and how much you purchased. Thomas Jefferson will not be very happy with you buying soda this week since most of the prices have just about doubled. Sadly there are some people out there who do not read this blog and are paying $1.93 more this week over last. So for those of you reading this blog, if you see these others out there, tell them about the Peanut Butter List and how they can 'Know before they go" where to get the lowest possible prices on their groceries.

Let's take a look at this week soda prices...
  • 12 Packs

12 pack winner: The stores! They win if you pay this much for your soda.
If I must pick one... Coke products at Safeway ($2.79)

Based on the prices at the stores, you might be lead to believe that they've added gold flakes to each can. As I stated earlier, with most brands at most stores reaching above $4.00, it would be cheaper to start drinking gasoline this week. Now, I don't recommend that at all, even if you buy premium and especially if you're a smoker. Don't drink gas and don't pay these prices for your soda. Neither one of these things lead to good places.

Coke products at Safeway are a fair price at $2.79, but this is still 0.39¢ more than just a few days ago. Compared to the rest of the brands and store prices this week this $2.79 price tag looks like a clearance item, but in relation to last weeks prices... it looks more like a car payment.

There are a couple "secret" deals out there this week also.
Kings has a few select 12 pack Pepsi brands on sale for $3.00 each that are not featured in the ad. You can get any flavor of Crush, Brisk or Sierra Mist saving you $1.33 over the other Pepsi flavors. Also be sure to keep an eye out for some coupons on some of those packages that will drop the price a little further.

Albertsons has Crush 12 packs advertised at $2.99 saving you $1.01 over the other Pepsi brands.  Again be sure to look for an IRC coupon on the boxes to save an extra $1.00 WYB2. This coupon would actually bring the price down to a very reasonable $2.49 each WYB2. This package was not declared the winner due to it not being a full line sale and is dependent on a coupon for the better price.

I want to remind you that these IRC coupons are usually manufacturer coupons and can be used at any store on the map. Check the dates on the coupon, if they don't expire until after September... save these coupons for the Labor Day sales and save even more money while the sale prices are so low.
Imagine last weeks prices with a $1.00 off coupon... You would've paid $2.40 per 12pk minus the $1.00 off coupon bringing the 12 pack price to a very low $1.90 each. That's only 0.16¢ per can! If you were able to only pay 0.16¢ per can on every soda you drank all year long you would save around 80 billion dollars per year (give or take a few bucks.) My math might be a bit off there, but just know that that's a huge savings on your soda.

  • 20 packs

20 pack winner: Coke products at Safeway ($5.49 WYB2)

There were no changes in prices on 20 packs from last week to this one. All but one are priced at or above 0.30¢ per can. Coke products at Safeway are 0.27¢ per can but if you look to the left about 2 feet you'll see the Coke 12 packs at 0.23¢ per can. There are more flavors of 12 packs and they're lighter than the 20 packs, so it's a win win situation any way you look at it to grab some 12's this week instead of the 20 packs.

  • 2 liters

2 liter winner: Pepsi or 7up at Safeway (Only during the 4 day sale.) (0.77¢)

The winner this week is Safeway's 4 day sale on Pepsi and 7up with a 0.77¢ price tag and a limit of 4. So for just $3.08 you walk out of the doors with 4 bottles of you favorite 2 liters and smile from ear to ear as you here all the change you saved jingle in your pockets.
For Coke drinkers, your best bet would be to head over to Kings and grab your 2 liters for 0.89¢ WYB10 Mix and Match items. They have quite a few items on the Mix and Match sale so you don't have to buy ten 2 liters, unless of course you really want to. The Coke deal at Kings lasts at least all week while the Safeway deal is only Friday through Monday.

Episode XXVII Summary:
If you absolutely have to buy soda this week, grab 2 liters instead of any other package out there. You can find every brand at one store or another for under a buck saving you tons of money over this weeks can prices.

Thanks again for checking out this weeks Soda Wars and again I apologize for not getting this out to you on Wednesday. Until next time, enjoy the summer and try to stay cool... and nothing is cooler than saving money on you groceries!
